A Taste of Mexico In Local Business
Saskia Sassan writes in her paper “The City: Strategic Site/New Frontier” “corporate power inscribes non-corporate cultures and identities with “otherness”. Though corporations and even governments have attempted to create this sense of otherness in local businesses or immigrant communities we are still able to find such places that have managed to become a part of and contribute to the society around them.
Phoenix just east of Cave Creek on Bell Rd. after 6pm there is a Taco truck called Nogales Hot Dogs that has bone just that. This food truck has become a staple in the local community. Growing up in this neighborhood I simply can not remember a time not seeing this location filled with customers every night of the week. This local food truck makes food from their local communities.
Enduring through the attempts of creating otherness, this Mexican family run company has become as much a part of us as the McDonalds located across the street from it. Nogales Hot Dogs has brought a taste of Sonora to Phoenix with its home style food cooked fresh everyday. Despite the attempts of locals to shun this local staple, everything from SB-1070 threatening to remove them to the increasing level of local racism, this company has stayed true to its roots and become a part of the landscape.
Above is a picture of their Vampiro. It is a torta topped with mounds of meat cabbage and then topped with a red sauce.
